The Quick Answer

For most Utah homes, a hybrid system (heat pump + small gas furnace as backup) is now the best option. You get most of the year on efficient electric heat, then fall back to gas only on the coldest days. Lowest utility bills, lowest emissions, longest equipment life.

How Each One Works

Gas Furnace

Burns natural gas to create heat, which is blown through your ductwork. Pretty straightforward. Modern condensing furnaces are 95–98% efficient — meaning 95-98% of the gas you pay for actually becomes heat in your home.

Heat Pump

Doesn't create heat — it moves heat. Like an AC running in reverse, it pulls heat out of outside air (even cold air has heat energy) and dumps it inside. Modern cold-climate units do this efficiently down to -13°F and continue operating (less efficiently) to about -22°F.

Heat pumps don't have an efficiency "percentage" — they have a COP (coefficient of performance). A COP of 3 means for every 1 unit of electricity, you get 3 units of heat. 300% efficient, in a sense. No combustion source can do that.
